Why Bank Transfer Is Europe's Default
In the United States, splitting a bill means Venmo or Cash App. In most of Europe, it means a bank transfer. In Germany and Austria, paying friends back via Überweisungis completely normal - IBANs appear on every invoice, and banking apps are how people move money. The Netherlands took it a step further: Tikkie, the country's favorite way to request money, is built directly on top of bank transfers.
There's also a cultural head start. German restaurants often offer getrennte Rechnung - separate bills - right at the table. But when one person covers the whole check (a birthday dinner, a group booking, a bar tab), a SEPA transfer is how everyone pays them back: no extra app, no account sign-up, no fees, straight from the banking app everyone already has.
What You Need: IBAN, Name, Amount
A SEPA credit transfer needs exactly three things:
- The recipient's IBAN - the account number, e.g.
DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00. Spaces don't matter; banking apps accept both grouped and ungrouped forms. - The recipient's name- banks now check that the name matches the IBAN (called Verification of Payee), so use the account holder's real name, not a nickname.
- The amount- and ideally a reference line like "Dinner at Luigi's" so the recipient can tell the transfers apart when eight people pay at once.
That's it. No usernames, no QR codes, no both-people-need- the-app requirement.
Instant vs. Standard Transfers
SEPA comes in two speeds. A standard transfer settles within one business day - fine for paying a friend back, less fun if they're waiting. SEPA Instant settles in under ten seconds, 24/7 including weekends and holidays, and EU rules now require euro-area banks to offer it without charging more than a standard transfer.
Practically: when your group pays their shares at the table, the host usually sees the money land before everyone's coats are on.
How It Works
- One person pays the full bill at the restaurant.
- Work out each person's share. Use tidytab to scan the receipt so every share is exact, including shared items.
- Share your IBAN and name with the group - in the group chat, or automatically via your tidytab bill page.
- Everyone opens their banking app, pastes the IBAN, enters their exact amount, and adds a short reference.
- The money arrives - instantly with SEPA Instant, or next business day at the latest.
Sharing an IBAN Is Normal (and Safe)
Some people hesitate before posting their account number in a group chat. In practice, an IBAN only lets people send you money. Pulling money out of an account requires a signed direct-debit mandate, and SEPA gives you an eight-week unconditional refund right on any consumer direct debit. Businesses print their IBAN on every invoice for exactly this reason.
The bigger risk in bill splitting is a typo - one wrong digit and the transfer bounces or goes astray. IBANs have a built-in checksum, so banking apps catch most typos, but copy-paste beats retyping every time.
tidytab + Bank Transfer
tidytab treats SEPA as a first-class way to get paid back. Add your IBAN when you create the bill, and each person's share page shows a bank-transfer option: one tap copies your name, your IBAN, and their exact share in one go, ready to paste into any banking app. The IBAN is checksum-validated when you save it, so a mistyped digit never reaches your friends.
Snap the receipt, share the link, and everyone pays their real share - no mental math on tax or shared starters, and no "what was the IBAN again?" messages at midnight.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
- Always add a reference.Eight transfers of similar amounts with no reference are a bookkeeping headache. "Pizza Friday" takes two seconds.
- Send exact amounts.Rounding "to keep it simple" is how the person who fronted the bill quietly loses money. Sending the exact share costs you nothing when the math is already done for you.
- Use the account holder's real name. Payee-verification checks now warn or block transfers when the name doesn't match the IBAN.
- Crossing currencies?SEPA is built for euros. For euro-to-pound or euro-to-franc splits, Wise or Revolut will usually beat a bank's exchange rate.
