A Splitwise Alternative, Honestly Compared

Splitwise is the ledger app most people know, and its free plan has limits. Splitwise's help center says “free users can add up to 4 expenses each day,” and Splitwise Pro is where unlimited expenses, receipt scanning, itemization, currency conversion and an ad-free experience live.

If you enter a whole trip's receipts in one sitting, four a day is the wall you hit. And if you just want to split tonight's dinner by what each person ordered, the parts you need are the paid ones.

• The bill at the table. Snap the receipt, share one link, and each friend taps the dishes they had. Tax and tip are shared in proportion, and shared plates can be split in halves, thirds or quarters.
• Friends install nothing. A bill opens in the browser, with no account and no email. Joining a tidytab group asks for a name and an email.
• The payment apps people actually use. Venmo, Cash App and PayPal open with the amount filled in, and Zelle or bank details are one tap to copy. Splitwise lists Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal in the US, and names no Zelle or Cash App.
• No cap, no ads, nothing to upgrade. Scanning and itemizing are free on every bill.
• You see who has paid, live. The bill page updates as each friend pays, so you stop asking.

Splitwise's free plan, according to its homepage, includes splits by percentage or shares, recurring expenses, offline mode and 100+ currencies. tidytab groups don't split by percentage or shares or repeat expenses yet, work only partly offline, and support 8 currencies. They also can't do these things yet:

• Hold more than one currency in a group
• Record one expense paid by several people
• Export the ledger
• Archive a group, or let a member leave it
• Show categories or totals per member
• Edit a bill after it's published

tidytab groups do keep running balances, simplify who owes whom, record settlements, and save everyone's payment details. But if your group lives in a long-running ledger, Splitwise does more of that job today.

Roommates and couples. Rent, utilities and the internet bill repeat every month, and they're often split unevenly: 60/40 for the bigger room, or by share. That needs recurring expenses and splits by percentage, which Splitwise's free plan does and tidytab groups don't. If you add four or fewer expenses a day, the free plan's cap won't touch you.

Everyone else with a restaurant bill. If the split you dread is tonight's dinner, the birthday, or the table of ten where half don't drink, that's what tidytab is for. You can use both: Splitwise for the apartment, tidytab for going out.
