Pre-Tax vs Post-Tax Tipping

Either approach is acceptable. Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal since the tax goes to the government, not the server. That said, many people simply tip on the total shown on the bill including tax. The difference is usually small — pick whichever is easier and feel good about it.

When to Tip More

Consider tipping above 20% for large groups (where coordination is harder for servers), exceptionally attentive service, holidays and special occasions, or complex orders that require extra effort. If auto-gratuity is already included for your party size, there's no obligation to add more — but an extra few percent for standout service is always appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply your bill amount by 0.20 (or move the decimal one place left and double it). For example, 20% of a $50 bill is $50 × 0.20 = $10.00.
Should I tip on the tax?
Either way is acceptable. Most etiquette experts suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the full amount (including tax) is also common and perfectly fine.
What is a good tip for a large group?
18–20% is standard for large parties. Many restaurants automatically add an 18–20% gratuity for groups of 6 or more, so check your bill before adding extra.
How do I split the tip evenly?
Add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people. For example, a $60 total (bill + tip) split 3 ways is $20 per person.
Is it okay to tip less for bad service?
10–15% is considered appropriate for poor service. If the experience was truly unacceptable, speak to a manager rather than leaving no tip — servers often rely on tips as a significant part of their income.
How much do you tip for delivery?
15–20% of the order total is standard for food delivery, with a minimum of $3–5. Consider tipping more for large orders, bad weather, or long distances.
