How to Split the Cost of a Ski House
Price the house by the night, collect it once, and get back to the mountain.
Price It by the Night
An even split is fair when everyone stays the whole time. When some friends arrive late, divide the house cost by the nights people actually stay. If the rooms differ a lot, agree on any extra for the best room before anyone books.
A Worked Example
Eight friends book four nights, Thursday to Monday. Say the house comes to $3,360.00 with fees and taxes. Omar books it. Six friends stay all four nights; Max and Zoe come for Friday and Saturday.
The nights:
- 6 × 4 + 2 × 2 = 28 person-nights
- $3,360.00 ÷ 28 = $120.00 per person per night.
What each person pays
- All 4 nights: $480.00 each for 6 people, collecting $2,880.00.
- The weekend: $240.00 each for 2 people, collecting $480.00.
- Together: $3,360.00.
An even split would be $420.00 each, so Max and Zoe would each pay $180.00 more than their nights cost.
Groceries, Lift Tickets and Gear
Each person buys their own lift tickets and rentals. The big grocery shop is one receipt split evenly among the people eating. For dinners out, choose “Pick dishes” so everyone pays for what they ordered.
How to Do It in tidytab
- Collect for the full stay. Choose “Collect a fixed amount”, name it “Ski house, 4 nights”, enter $480.00 in “Each person pays”, and set “People (incl. you)” to 6. Add your name, email and payment methods, publish, and add your own share when offered.
- Collect for the weekend. Make a second collection called “Ski house, weekend” at $240.00 each, and set “People (incl. you)” to 2, for Max and Zoe only. Your own nights are already in the first collection, so leave yourself out of the count. When tidytab offers to add your share after publishing, skip it, and leave “Add my share” alone on that bill's page too.
- Share each link with the people it is for. Friends pay you directly, and each page shows who has paid. A couple can pay for both in one payment.
